Kidwinks Weight Loss Group
In my weekly email (Chicago Family Activities Guide for September 13 - 19, 2010) to kidwinks subscribers, I invited any and all to join me in a quest to lose some weight and get back to a healthy lifestyle. So far, four brave souls have signed on! So here begins our public bid to shed those extra pounds and begin (or resume) a healthy lifestyle. Here's our group and what I know about them:
- Me (Jean Lemke): I live in Park Ridge and would like to lose about 30 lbs., which would put me back at my wedding weight. My 16 year anniversary is this Thursday. I am determined it will NOT take me as long to take it off as it has to put it on!!
- Shannon: Shannon lives in Des Plaines and is all for the weight loss posting - she thinks it will be a great support.
- Susan: Susan lives in Evanston and wrote "I too have made the pledge and started taking the plunge to a healthier lifestyle and a weight I would feel good about." She's got a range of numbers she'd be comfortable with.
- Genie: Genie lives in Oswego and thinks it will be helpful for us to encourage each other.
- Mary: Mary says she has a little to lose around the tummy and hips and thinks this might be a good way to truly get back to a healthier routine.
My thoughts are to use this blog as our communication vehicle to comment and support each other. I'll write a bit here about my struggles, what I've tried, what worked and didn't, etc. I'd love to hear the same from each of you - you can comment on this post to let us all know. If anyone wants to be a guest blogger and write a post, please let me know. It's fun that we're all from different suburbs (Mary, please let us know where you live) and can come together virtually to support each other. I think each week we should do a weigh in and post our progress. No need to publish your weight unless you want to (I know I certainly don't want that number floating around -- yikes!). I think this should be on the honor system. Weigh yourselves today and that is your starting point. Each week (how about every Friday - this will be a short week) we will weigh ourselves and report the results to the group through this blog. Periodically I'll share our progress in my kidwinks emails.
What do you think? Any other ideas? We can also share recipes, exercise tips, etc. if you'd like. I think it would be fun to post pictures, too. We could each take a photo in clothes that won't hide anything (like yoga pants or bicycle shorts) and post them, then periodically post new pics wearing the same clothes. It would be fun to put faces to all of your names, too.
Here's a little about me: I've battled with my weight all my life. As a baby and throughout childhood, I was always chubbier than my (fraternal) twin sister, who never had a weight issue. In my teen years and throughout adulthood, I yo yoed from being healthy and fit, to 30 lbs. or so overweight. In my late 20's I lost about 35 lbs. by religiously logging everything I ate, and keeping my calories to 1600 or less and fat grams to 20. It's a lot of bother at first, but after awhile you know the calorie counts of many foods by heart. I also exercised 1.5 hours a day (45 - 50 minutes aerobics, plus weight training, stretching and ab work) at least 5 days a week. That's a little harder to do now that I have my family to care for, but I should be able to do something everyday - 30 minutes at least!
After having my daughters later in life (I was 39 & 41), it was harder to lose the extra weight. Hip and back problems prevented me from exercising for almost 3 years after my second daughter's birth. A hip replacement (turns out I was born with hip dysplasia) finally solved that problem, but I never got back to the exercise regime. So I've got a lot of fat to lose and muscle to build.
I've tried the South Beach Diet, and can lose 10 lbs. in 2 weeks following their strict Phase I (no sugar, fruit or bad carbs - just lean meat, low sugar veggies, low fat cheeses, eggs and a few nuts). But it's hard to do when you're cooking for a family that is not following the plan.
So I'm going to go back to a food diary and calorie limit. I've been logging my intake for the past 3 days, and it's really eye-opening. The amount of calories that I've been eating is way way beyond the 1600 calorie plan I used to follow. It's amazing how fast they add up! I'm also drinking more water (trying for at least 8 glasses per day) and less Diet Coke. Now that the weather will be turning cooler, I'll start drinking more green tea too.
How about you? What are you doing to change your lifestyle? Share with us all.

Sounds like a great plan, Jean! Ýou've inspired me to live a healthier lifestyle too and I've decided to start going to exercise classes again after probably at least a 15 year break. I went to my first one today and it was invigorating! Thanks for the gentle push!
Week 1: I'm down only 1 pound. Got into trouble with lunch out, anniversary dinner, birthday party and baking.
Shannon reports that her clothes feel looser, but her scale is broken so she can't track numbers. Way to go, Shannon!
Jean,
So sorry I'm responding to this blog so late. I was crazy busy all last week. Somehow I managed to double book each day with more activities that we could all handle. Glad that's past us and were able to move on this week. I did however loose 1.5lbs last week and I'll take it. I didn't get my workouts so I'm hoping for a little more this week. As I was thinking about weight loss this week I have decided the word ONLY is a bad word. I have promised myself only to celebrate accomplishments as little as they are. Sometimes it gets me down when I only loose a 1/2 a week. 1/2 pound is a lot... It's two sticks of butter.
A Little about me. I have 3 beautiful children who keep me super busy. I have 4 year old boy/girl twins and a 7.5 month old daughter. I work full time as an accountant. I wish my job was a little more exciting but it's not. I'm fortunate enough to have my sister - in - law come to my house and watch my kids for me. I get up at 4am every morning to get ready for work so I can work early and be home at 3pm to enjoy the rest of the day with my kids. I find myself always running on empty. I'm constantly doing laundry and cleaning when the kids go to bed. My husband works in the city so he has a long commute each day.
I have struggled with weight loss my entire life. I was at my thinnest feeling when I got married 7 years ago. I never felt better. Shortly there after I had the twins and embarrassed to say gained 75 lbs w/ fertility and pregnancy. The 2 years after the twins were born I struggled to try and loose weight and I gave up. I never wanted to leave the kids and go to the gym since I was gone all day at work. Finally in January 2009 I joined Weight Watchers with my coworkers and the weight just seam to fall off. I was so excited. My kids turned 4 on June 15th and on June 16th I was only 15 lbs away from my wedding weight and my pre-pregnancy jeans fit. A little snug but none the less on and buttoned. June 17th, I felt tired and after consulting all my co-workers we came to a conclusion I might be pregnant. Baffled by this surprise.... I tested and yes it was positive... I was in disbelief since it was many sessions of IVF to have the twins. This pregnancy was truly a gift from God. So here I am again trying to loose the weight. I have about 35lb to loose to get back to my wedding weight and I know I can do this if I stay focused.

Thank you for the reminder Jean.
I did mamage to run or use the elliptical machine 3 times this week and have lifted weights 3 times a week the past 2 weeks. Last week the scale said I had gained 2 lbs!?! Today I have lost 1 lb. Made a lemon meringue pie over the weekend and decided to do a "quality check" on 2 slices, so 1 pound less I'll take, but really want to go for it this week. Went for a walk at lunch with a co-worker and that felt great too.
I am a mom of a 5 year old boy and I also work 4 days a week. I still had some baby weight but was still fairly active. About a year and half ago, my husband started his own business and while he making great progress, he works pretty much everyday, including weekends, so it's been hard to find time to run, which I did lot of before having Leif (my little guy). I had also gotten some bad habits like snacking at 10pm when I come home from teaching my prenatal classes 2 nights a week after my day job. My weight has stayed the same, but my energy isn't what it needs to be to run around with my son and I could see my body was changing (waistline, where are you?)not for the better.
I'm working on the late night snacking and today, I passed on getting a midmorning scone which I have made habit of too. Little changes, but it helps to put it in writing and to have the extra support. Have a great week everyone! Susan
Thank you to Genie and Susan for their posts. You too, Jan - she's my twin sister everyone. It really helps me to have this support and friendship. I did better today, but need to get those brownies out of my house and on their way to my nephew immediately!!!
Genie, what a blessing your pregnancy was. I know you'll lose the weight - we'll do it together.
Susan, your quality control check on 2 slices of pie made me lol. You sound just like me!
Here's to a good week all around!
Jean
It's taken me two years to lose 40 pounds. I have another 10 pounds to go to get to get to my goal weight. My lowest adult weight was 135 and I'd like to get there again - I'm only 5'2" so it's not an unrealistic goal. I think where some of us fail is that we don't see results as quickly as we want - there is SO MUCH TRUTH to the fact that the older we get the harder it is to lose weight. I turned 40 this year and every pound that I have lost has been very hard earned!
I'd love to share my tips - I think they are usable and realistic. I use a bodybugg (bodybugg.com) to track my calories burned each day and I use an on-line diary to track my calories in - my daily goals include 12,000 steps each day, 1 1/2 hours of moderate activity each day. I try to keep my calories "in" to 1800 or less, with a calorie burn of 2300 or more.
My number one tip - when I do laundry - I take each item out one at a time and put it away. Sound ridiculous? Time consuming? Sometimes this IS MY ONLY form of daily exercise and I still reach my daily step/activity/calorie burn goals! It amazes me that I can make it without even leaving the house, pounding the pavement, or attend an exercise class. NO EXCUSES! You can do it!
Thanks for the post and tips, cdpmom! I'm a few years ahead of you, and I can assure you it doesn't get easier!
Another week, another pound. This is going too slow - time to kick myself in the butt and get this thing going!
A pound a week is PERFECT if you ask me!
I went to the doctor today for a routine followup scale showed that I had lost 7 pounds since my last appointment 2 months ago! Doctor scales are notoriously unforgiving so I was ecstatic at these results!
I've been making my daily goal of 12K steps/ 1.5 hours of moderate activity on most days - and I've been watching what I eat. Funny how that works - eat less, move more, lose weight!
Teresa's tip of the day - limit animal protein servings to 3 ounces at a time!
Good luck guys!
Congrats on your 7 lb. loss, cdpmom! I wish I had similar progress to report, but alas, I do not. No change for me this week. It must've been the Taffy Apple Bar at the Morton Arboretum yesterday and the sinful patty melt I had today. Oh, and the fact that I can't drag my butt out of bed to exercise in the morning. Gotta stop these late, late nights!
No change this past week; probably because I can't seem to stay away from sweets! I just finished 30 minutes on my elliptical trainer and did some squats, push ups and crunches. Hope to get in a little weight lifting later in the day. Maybe I should join a class of some sort...I'm not very good at the weight lifting / stretching on my own.
Hi everyone,
Had bronchitis for the past week and just getting back up to speed.
Congratulations cdpmom on the 7lbs!
The week before last I lost a 1/2 pound and I thought all the coughing I did would be very aerobic exercise. I was sure I would get out of bed, the breeze fluttering my flowy gown as I stepped into a gleaming light onto the scale... I was sure it would say 10 pounds..... but reality hit and it was 1 pound and curiously, no breeze and I had my usual tank top jammies on.
I have been exercisisng 3 times a week except for the last week and my clothes do feel looser! Progress!!
I also have been avoiding the afternoon snack attack at work with some Nabisco 100 calorie Mister salty yogurt covered pretzels(is this prodcut placement?). Only 7g of sugar but I feel like I got a sweet fix.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! We can do it!
Am ging to my first PTA meeting this week... Should I be nervous?
Ha ha ha, Susan!! You're funny!!! Coughing as aerobic exercise -- now there's something I can do!
I've been tracking every morsel entering my mouth this week using the free website myfitnesspal.com. You can set goals for yourself, track your food and exercise, and more. I really like it - it's pretty easy to use and there's also a free app you can download for your phone. The beginning of the week showed me UP 1 lb.!!! I'm afraid to get back on that sassy scale. Especially after the girls night out last night. I NEVER would've ordered that pumpkin spice martini if I had any inkling as to the number of calories in the thing! Still don't know for sure, but looking at similar drinks with what I assume are similar ingredients, that was a very bad move on my caloric part! Ouch!
You know, I'm not a chemist, but doesn't alcohol denature sugar? Maybe it is only half the calories. Even it wasn't it sounds yummy... It seems I'm checking my scale at the end of the week and 1 more pound gone.
It's not fast, that's for sure. I'm keeping myself running and using the elliptical so I don't embarrass myself at the MOnster dash run on Halloween. A 5K in costume. I guess I will still feel embarassed by my costume (Lady Gaga) but I have been running. Who knew looking ridiculous was good reason to exercise. Have a great week!
Susan, I'm not a chemist either, but I really like the way you think. I'm going with the "alcohol denatures sugar" theory! Good luck in the Monster Dash!
Well, I'm down 5 lbs. total since we started. I thought I'd be down 10 by now, but I'll take the 5. People are noticing it in my face. Lucky me. I lose it in my face first rather than my hips.
On the recommendation of one of our members who is a fitness professional, I purchased EA Sports Personal Trainer for the Wii. I tried it tonight for the first time and was sweating by the end of the 20 minute "easy" workout. I did way more lunges and squats than called for because it wasn't recognizing them. That part was frustrating; there's a holder for the nunchuck that straps to your right thigh, and I finally had to take the nunchuck out and just hold it. Then the dumb thing recognized my squats. ARGHHH!!! Other than that, it's fun and has lots of different workouts so I won't get bored.
I highly recommend you check out myfitnesspal.com for tracking your food and exercise. It's easy and free, and they even have a free app. There are hundreds of thousands of foods and restaurant items already loaded. Thank you to Nina for telling me about it!
Looking at the bright side, 1/2 lb. is better than nothing...or gaining. I used to be able to lose weight a lot faster. Must be the age thing..... But then I see fb pics of my cousin, who's 8 years older, and I see she's lost at least 30 lbs. or so. So if she can do it, so can I! I'm reinspired, and it's a good thing, with all of this Halloween candy sitting around.
So my cousin has lost 65 lbs.! Wow! No wonder she looks fantabulous! I've been greatly inspired by her, and exercising more and being even more vigilant on my calorie intake. And I lost another pound. Yea! Then the next day (Sunday) I was 2 lbs. up! WHAT???? GIVE ME A BREAK! How'd that happen? It better be temporary water weight or maybe my scale is just being mean. I should throw it out the window...or at least jump up and down on it. Nasty, spiteful thing.
What? No activity here? Lets get active again!
